Fashion Design: Kimono Inspired Wedding Dress

In 2021, Kamila CK collaborated with the fashion designer Simona Marletta to create a contemporary kimono inspired wedding dress for her wedding in 2022.

Image gallery below showcases the dress various photoshoots staged and developed by the artist in the Dolomites, Tuscany, Lake Como, and Lake Maggiore (Italy).

THE DRESS DESIGN:
The design was inspired by Kamila CK’s fascination with Japan and the kimono. A country the artist has visited multiple times and since then frequently wore and owned several kimonos.

The white and red colour scheme pays tribute to the colours of the national flags of Poland, England and Japan. Poetically, it expresses a duality of a perfect union; red stands for passion, strength and energy while white balances it with purity, simplicity and peacefulness.

The kimono sleeves can be removed from the dress for a more classical and contemporary look.

FABRICS AND RED UNDERLAY CONCEPT:

The white fabric on the outside is embroidered with abstract pattern resembling Japanese caligrahpy.
The red fabric was specifically placed as a lining of the dress based on the Japanese woodblock print “Fireworks on Ryogoku Bridge” seen during “Kimono, Kyoto to Catwalk” exhibition at Victoria & Albert Museum, London 2020.

”In Edo period, using red on the outside of the kimono was forbidden (red hue was apparently very expensive). However there was no restriction on using the colour on undergarments or linings. Overtime, the use of colour red that way became very fashionable while being seductive. A fleeting glimpse being deemed more sensuous than an overt display”.
