About the Artwork:
This performative painting was created live during rehearsals for the debut of “The Circle of Everything” interdisciplinary performance art work at Camden Fringe 2024.
The Enso, an iconic symbol of Zen Buddhism, represents unity, enlightenment, strength, and elegance. Painted in one fluid masterstroke and a single breath, it captures the essence of being in the flow, embodying the Zen philosophy of synchronicity and life force energy.
Created by artist Kamila CK, this large-scale Enso was painted live and integrated into the choreography of the performance. In the final scene, vibrant red and metallic gold inks were added from above, utilizing gravity and the movement of a spinning aerial hoop. The combination of these colors with black Sumi ink adds depth and vibrancy, making the piece a unique blend of deliberate action and chance, capturing a singular, unrepeatable moment in time.
This work is part of Kamila CK’s ongoing exploration of Enso painting, a practice she has been developing since 2018 as a means to explore synchronicities in art. Inspired by her studies of traditional Japanese calligraphy (shodo) under the guidance of Japanese teacher Rie Takeda during her visits to Japan in 2018 and 2019, Kamila has created a distinctive style that blends traditional Zen calligraphy with contemporary visual art, performance, and aerial movement.
This artwork is a performative piece and, as part of its creation process, it may display minor signs of use. These subtle marks are integral to the authenticity of the work and reflect the dynamic, live performance from which it was born.
Unique Features:
Highly Collectible: A one-of-a-kind artwork created in preparation for an iconic live performance that premiered at Camden Fringe, London, making it a valuable addition to any collection.
Zen Aesthetics: Emphasizes simplicity and mindfulness, reflecting Kamila CK’s deep engagement with traditional Japanese calligraphy.
Large Scale: Designed to be as expansive as possible, allowing for the dynamic movement of the artist within the circle as part of the performance.
Colorful Expression: This is the first collection where the artist combines Enso painting with colors—black Sumi ink, red alcohol ink, and metallic gold ink—applied using aerial movement from above.
Versatile Display Options: To ensure cost-effective and efficient delivery, the canvas is provided unstretched. Given the substantial size of the artwork, shipping a stretched canvas would incur significant costs, exceeding £1,000. Unstretching allows for safe transport at a fraction of the cost, while maintaining the integrity of the piece. Stretching can easily be arranged upon receipt at a local framer. Alternatively, the versatile, unstretched canvas can also be hung like an Asian scroll, mounted flat against the wall, or flat behind glass.
Shipping: The artwork will be carefully rolled and shipped in a secure tube, ready for stretching, framing, or mounting according to your preference.
